What Are Ordinal Numbers?

Ordinal numbers tell us the position of something in a group or sequence. Instead of telling us how many there are, they tell us where something comes in order.

For example, three tells us how many dinosaurs there are, while third tells us which dinosaur is in a specific position.

Children will commonly see ordinal numbers written in two forms:

1st – first

2nd – second

3rd – third

4th – fourth

5th – fifth

Learning to connect forms like 1st with the word first helps children recognize and use ordinal numbers in both math activities and everyday situations.

How to Teach Ordinal Numbers to Kindergarteners

One of the easiest ways to introduce ordinal numbers is to make position something children can see. Line up a few toy dinosaurs or other familiar objects and ask questions such as, “Which dinosaur is first?” or “Which one is third?”

You can also switch the activity around by naming a position and asking the child to identify the correct object. Once the idea of position is familiar, worksheets can help children practice connecting written forms such as 2nd with second.

Our dinosaur worksheet set includes additional ordinal number activities for children who need more practice recognizing and writing these different forms.

Ordinal Numbers 1st–10th

When children are learning ordinal numbers, it helps to see the number form and the written word together. Here is a simple reference for the first ten ordinal numbers:

Number Ordinal Word
1st first
2nd second
3rd third
4th fourth
5th fifth
6th sixth
7th seventh
8th eighth
9th ninth
10th tenth

The first three are especially important to practice because first, second, and third look very different from one, two, and three. From fourth onward, children may begin to notice that many ordinal words are closely related to the number words they already know.

Keep this list nearby while practicing, or use it to ask quick questions such as, “How do you write sixth as an ordinal number?” and “What word matches 9th?”

Yes. Printable dinosaur activities can complement homeschool lessons across subjects such as math, reading, writing, and other foundational skills. They can be especially useful when you want a quick, ready-to-use activity without preparing an entire lesson from scratch.

Try combining worksheets with hands-on dinosaur activities. Children might use dinosaur figures as counting tools, color the dinosaurs after completing an activity, read a dinosaur book afterward, or earn a few minutes of dinosaur play when their learning activity is finished.

Not necessarily. Black-and-white worksheets are particularly convenient because they use less ink and allow children to color the illustrations themselves. This can turn a simple learning worksheet into an additional creative activity.

Start with the skill you want your child to practice rather than choosing solely by difficulty. For example, you might look for tracing, handwriting, counting, addition, reading, matching, or problem-solving activities. From there, choose an activity that provides an appropriate level of challenge without becoming frustrating.
